Achieving the career success that is meaningful to you is like embarking on an exciting adventure, full of twists, turns, and opportunities for growth.

And navigating this journey involves more than just a good resume. It requires building the right connections, constantly improving yourself, setting strategic goals, and sticking to them for the long term. (note: don't get too worked up over the term strategy, it's really quite simple: a plan of action designed to achieve a long-term or overall aim is all it is).

Can you incorporate these concepts into your professional life? If yes, you will enhance your career trajectory and put yourself on the path to achieve long-term success, working in jobs you love!

Let’s get stuck in and make your career a successful and fulfilling one!

Networking 🤝

Networking is like your secret weapon for finding new opportunities when you least expect them, learning genuine insights about your industry and profession, and building meaningful professional connections that will serve your career in the long term.

Here’s how to make the most of it:

1. Offer Value

Networking isn’t about what you can get; it’s quite the opposite in fact, it's about what you can give. Offer help and valuable support to your network without expecting anything in return. For instance, if you have a unique skill or knowledge, you can offer it to help someone in your network. This builds trust and reputation, making others more likely to support you in the future. The issue you'll encounter if you approach your networking from a purely "what's in for me" angle is that everyone will see through it immediately. It's really easy for us to see people who are just using us for their benefit and being transactional - we're almost hard-wired for it as humans. So avoid this by taking a 'giving first' approach.

In my last corporate role, I spent a lot of time volunteering to mentor some of my junior colleagues - something that turned out to not only strengthen my professional relationships but also led me to discover more of what brings me fulfillment, opening up new opportunities, and creating a deeper network of support for my own career ambitions.

2. Set Clear Goals

Knowing what you want to achieve with your networking efforts will make all the difference! Don't underestimate this step!

Are you looking for a mentor to guide you, seeking job opportunities in a specific industry, or aiming to gain insights about your industry or profession? Define your goals clearly so you can tailor your networking efforts and measure your success more effectively. If you're not clear about your goals, consider working with a Career Coach to support you. Nothing feels worse than when you work hard and achieve your goal, only to discover you've been chasing the wrong goal the whole time 😬

The take-home message here is to know what you're trying to achieve. Don't 'go in blind' and just network for the sake of networking - at best this will lead to potentially wasted time - at work it could lead to negative impacts on your career!

3. Identify Key People

Focus on connecting with people who can help you achieve your career goals. This might include industry leaders who can provide valuable advice based on their vast experience, potential mentors who can offer support and guidance particularly relevant to your situation, or peers who share your professional interests.

However, don't limit yourself just to these key people. The true value in a network is in its longevity - and you can't predict where people are going to end up and who might be in a position to help you out in the future. So, beyond those key people for the short term, ensure you're also connecting with people you're interested in and genuinely enjoy being around in a professional context. These networking gems could be an unanticipated source of opportunity when you least expect it.

Building relationships with key people is what will provide the specific support and opportunities you need to advance on the right track. However, building genuinely meaningful long-term relationships with like-minded people is what will serve your career over the longer term.

4. Attend Networking Events

Participate in industry conferences, seminars, and networking events. Or in whatever informal places you might find the relevant people. These gatherings provide excellent opportunities to meet like-minded professionals and expand your network. Be proactive, introduce yourself, and engage in intentional conversations you enjoy.

Ah, the dreaded in-person event... It can be quite hard for many people to do face-to-face events, it can feel awkward or daunting. Just keep in mind that many of the other people there feel the same way (or did when they first started) and so you're not alone. Find ways to overcome your fears and hesitations, and after getting a few under your belt, you'll find that it becomes easier. As I always say, confidence is created through familiarity, and familiarity is created through repetitive exposure; so "get the reps in!"

5. Use Online Platforms 🌐

Social media and professional networking sites like LinkedIn are powerful tools for your networking. Make sure to keep your profile updated to reflect your latest achievements. If you're feeling brave, share relevant industry content that you can offer specific insights on, and actively engage with others.

As you're already aware, building a strong online presence helps you stay connected and visible in your professional community. Don't underestimate the power of these platforms; they can literally change the trajectory of your career.

6. Follow Up

After meeting someone, send a personal follow-up message. Thank them for their time and mention something specific from your conversation to reinforce the connection. This simple act of appreciation can go a long way in building lasting relationships and keeping the dialogue open 💌

As an added bonus, by including the specific detail from the conversation, you can refer back to it before you speak to them next to remind you of your first interaction.

Continuous Learning

If you want to stay relevant and competitive in our 21st century economy continuous learning is something you're going to need to embrace to stay relevant.

Here are some ideas to ensure you are constantly improving your skills and knowledge:

1. Invest in Formal Education 🎓

As the saying goes, "you can never be too smart, too rich, or have too much education"... And whilst I do believe there is a significant change coming in the area of formal education over the coming decades, it's still 100% worthwhile considering pursuing additional degrees, certifications, or courses relevant to your field.

Formal education not only increases your knowledge but also enhances your credibility and attractiveness to relevant potential employers. Whether it’s an advanced degree or a specialized certification, investing in education can open new doors in your career.

Also, keep in mind there are numerous opportunities to improve skills with informal and short courses - they have their place too!

2. Attend Workshops and Seminars

Workshops and seminars are excellent for staying updated on the latest trends and developments in your industry. They also provide valuable networking opportunities where you can exchange ideas with other like-minded professionals. Engaging actively in these events can offer new insights and create new opportunities to make important connections.

There are almost limitless options to attend such events, so be sure to take some time to research and review the available options - you don't want to spend unnecessary time attending things that have little to no value for you.

3. Do Some Self-Study

Take advantage of online resources such as webinars, podcasts, and articles. Whether you’re exploring a new technology or understanding industry trends, self-study allows you to explore and focus on those topics that interest you and learn at your own pace.

A beneficial by-product of consistently conducting self-study is that it impacts the way you think in the long term. I like to call the information you consume regularly your"information diet" - and just like the food you eat impacts your physical health, your information diet can have a huge impact on your career health.

4. Seek Feedback

Regularly (!) seek feedback from colleagues, mentors, and supervisors.

This definitely will not always be easy, but constructive feedback helps you refine your personal understanding of your strengths and areas for improvement like nothing else. The best way to use this feedback is to sharpen your learning focus and make conscious decisions about your professional growth direction.

5. Embrace Lifelong Learning 🌱

The truth is that you will change and evolve as a person throughout your career, and that is absolutely ok! Cultivate a mindset of lifelong learning. Stay curious, embrace new experiences, and be willing to step out of your comfort zone.

Learning helps you adapt to unexpected changes (and believe me, they will happen regularly) and remain resilient in the face of challenges.

Setting SMART Goals

Setting SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals is such a game-changer for achieving career success. And you can start implementing it right now for free! Just ensure that your goals are short term!

Here’s how to do it:

1. Specific

🎯 Define your goals specifically and clearly.

Instead of setting a vague goal like "advance in my career," be specific about what that advancement looks like. For example, "I aim to secure a managerial position within the marketing department by the end of the year."

The detail here helps you focus your efforts and prevent yourself from getting side-tracked. It also helps you to more easily measure your progress.

2. Measurable

Quantify your goals to track progress effectively.

For instance, setting a goal to "increase sales by 20% within six months" or "complete three professional development courses this year" allows you to monitor your achievements and make the adjustments you need.

Ideally, you want your measurable goal to align with a career development goal you've discussed with your manager.

3. Achievable

Ensure your goals are realistic given your current resources and constraints.

While it’s important to challenge yourself, setting goals that are too far out of reach often leads to frustration and burnout...

It's best to balance visionary ambition with grounded practicality to stay motivated and on track ✔️

4. Relevant

How can you align your goals with your long-term career objectives and personal values? Each goal should contribute to your overall career development and life success. For example, if career growth is important to you, set goals that support upward mobility in the field you choose.

I recommend to people to steer clear of simplistic goals that don't serve the higher purpose of moving you closer to your career vision - i.e. "I want to make $10,000 a year more." Whilst making more money is always good and you shouldn't avoid focusing on your earning potential - if it's your solo focus you risk ending up in a highly unfulfilling career that you can't sustain.

5. Time-bound ⏳

Set deadlines for your goals.

This helps you to drive your efforts towards timely achievement, and keep yourself motivated, focused, and accountable! For example, "secure a new job within three months" or "complete a certification course by the end of the quarter."

The risk in not setting yourself a deadline is that without them you'll likely struggle to prioritize effectively - meaning your goals will be forever out of reach through distractions and working on non-priorities.

Implementing SMART Goals

Break Down Larger Goals:

Divide big goals into smaller, manageable tasks. In fact, don't even have "big goals" - have small and short-term goals, that together push you closer to your career vision.

This approach helps us by making our goals less overwhelming and easier to tackle step by step.

Write It Down:

Document your goals to reinforce your commitment and keep track of your progress.

Having a written plan helps you stay organized and accountable.

Track Your Progress:

As I said, we are always changing as people. So make sure you regularly review your intentions and adjust your goals as needed. This allows you to stay on course, make necessary changes, and celebrate your achievements along the way.

I like to set reminders on my phone at suitable intervals (for me it's quarterly), so that I never miss checking in on my goals and progress.
